In February and March of this year Rhino Staging and G2 Structures, a live events industry leader in the provision of stage roof and ancillary structures and scaffolding and decking, teamed up for a series of training events for G2 personnel.

Phase One

The first part of the training took place in late February when six G2 managers attended a SPRAT level one rope access course. This five-day course was taught by Rhino’s National Director of Rigging Johnny Stebbing and Rigging & Rope Access Advisor Steve Davis at our office and training facility in Las Vegas. Following the course evaluation by a SPRAT certified evaluator, the G2 staff stayed on in Las Vegas for an extra day of fall protection and rescue training with Johnny and Steve.

One Instructor’s Take-away

Steve had this to say about the training days:

What I noticed about the group that Johnny and I worked with was their serious effort and level of engagement. They showed up early and stayed late to ensure they were ready for the practical skills evaluation at the end of the week. The entire crew passed without any discrepancies – basically a 100%.

You would have never known the group’s primary responsibility is building large staging structures. They studied and trained like people who were going to start a rope access project the following week.

Kudos to the entire team and to the owners of G2 for investing time and resources in their people and the development of their safety program. I enjoyed getting to train with these folks, and look forward to working with them during the upcoming season.

Phase Two

The Las Vegas training set the stage for a second larger training at G2 headquarters in Mooresville, NC in late March. Thirty G2 leads and technicians were led through a three-day hands-on fall protection rescue training taught by Rhino’s Executive Director of Safety, Training and Rigging Matt Hudson. G2 will now have an average of at least 3 rescue trained technicians touring with each of their structures.

Following the training, Matt told us:

This is a great step forward for safety in the touring world. We thank G2 Structures for engaging us to train their technicians and for making the effort to provide this professional development for their employees.

Indeed, thank you, G2. To see firsthand your dedication to our shared values of safety, training and professionalism was gratifying. We will see you soon out there on the road.
